Dozens of people gathered at First Avenue Church on Saturday to take part in a five-kilometre walk-a-thon to raise money and awareness for the homeless youth in Chilliwack. Participants stopped at Cyrus Centre-the local youth shelter, and recipient of the event proceeds-as a halfway point for refreshments. The Coldest Night of the Year event is so named because it is held on the third Saturday of February (statistically the coldest night of the year in Canada) in an effort to create empathy for the youth who are forced to experience those conditions on the street. Run by a charity called Blue Sea Philanthropy, the goal of the Canada-wide walk is to end youth homelessness.
