North Saanich firefighters hosted the annual Grade 5 Fire Safety Expo at the Wain Road fire hall this week. Firefighters from Sidney, Central and North Saanich and the District of Saanich took around 900 students from schools across the Saanich Peninsula through a variety of stations, where they got to see how to be safe at home. They were also given hands-on time with hoses and fire extinguishers. North Saanich Deputy Fire Chief Steve Knapp said they are teaching the students to make a plan to share with parents, about how to have two ways to escape their homes in case of a fire.
