The 28th annual Howie Meeker Golf Classic was held at Storey Creek Golf Course in Campbell River Aug. 20. The tournament, associated auction and banquet features the presence of its namesake, hockey and broadcasting legend Howie Meeker, and raises money for Campbell River Special Olympics – three-quarters of a million dollars, so far. The money allows Campbell River Special Olympics to provide sport opportunities for Campbell River Special Olympians. The 92-year-old Meeker attends every year and meets with every team as it plays through the seventh hole (this year – usually it's the 17th hole). At this year's banquet, Meeker was inducted into the Special Olympics Hall of Fame.
